Students explore the properties of dry ice as they make spooky potions and the lesson activities offer teachable moments about states of matter, respiration, and properties of carbon dioxide and oxygen gas.

• Properties of materials (Physical Science, Grade 2, 1-1; Grade 5, 1-3)  
• Structure of matter (Grade 5, Physical Science 1-1)  
• Changes of state (Middle School, Physical Science 1-4)  

Safety Note: Dry ice is -78.5°C (-109.3°F), cold enough to cause frostbite. Students will be taught safe lab procedures during this lesson and are required to wear safety goggles when doing the activities.
