Braille Lab - Two students are shown working with a brailler, a device similar to an old fashion typewriter that allows an individual to type braille.

Braille Lab

Community Engagement  & Classroom Activities

Participants learn about the system of communication using using tactile dots known as braille that was developed by Louis Braille in France in the early 1800s.

Innovation for Youth has a wide variety of braille activities which allows us to deliver our activities in a developmentally appropriate way for participants of almost every age and ability.

Our primary focus in delivering Braille Lab activities is to engage people in the community who are sighted with braille as an abilities awareness activity. However, at times we collaborate with volunteers who are visually impaired who wish to participate with our team in sharing the joy of braille.  For many of our visiually impaired volunteers, assisting with Braille Lab programs has improved their confidence with and helped them gain valuable pre-professional experience.
